Part-time Faculty Role and Responsibilities

 At NTU, Part-time Faculty:

  • enhance the learning environment and students' experiences
  • grade student exams and keep records of grades
  • interact with Contributing Scholars on course content related questions, including exams and final grading
  • interact with students on a regular basis utilizing classroom tools
  • interact via email, phone, chat, voip and discussion sessions with students, Contributing Scholars, Chairs, and other members of the support team
  • facilitate discussions in the online classroom
  • answer student questions and/or passe questions to Contributing Scholar for further clarification
  • provide input to NTU academic team (Contributing Scholar, Chair, instructional design staff) regarding improvements or updates needed
  • provide input to the course evaluation process
  • are supported by a course concierge and academic advisor
  • participate in the school via the curriculum advising and other governance mechanisms
  • improve their skills via faculty development workshops
  • travel and connect to a large number of other faculty via national faculty meetings
  • receive awards and research/project funding through university-wide competition

Requirements

Below are general statements intended to describe the nature and level of work to be performed. This is not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities and duties.

Education

•  PhD in appropriate engineering discipline/field

    • Knowledge of subject matter
    • Hands-on, front-line experience

•  Teaching Experience

    • Two years at university level
    • Online, distance-education preferred

•  Skills

    • Excellent oral, written and electronic communications skills
    • Self-discipline and good organizational skills

•  Computer Resources

The following minimum computer resources will be required:

    • High-speed Internet access, at least equivalent to cable modem or DSL
    • Pentium III 933 MHz CPU
    • 256 MB RAM
    • 10 Gigabyte Hard Drive
    • 16M AGP video RAM
    • 52X CD-ROM Drive
    • 17" SVGA Color Monitor capable of up to 1024x768 (85 Hz) non-interlaced resolution
    • 10/100 Network Card
    • Keyboard and PS/2 Mouse 
    • Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP Professional
    • Office Professional 2000 or Office XP
    • Internet Explorer 5.5 or above

Employment

NTU wants to:

  • establish a long-term working relationship with Part-time Faculty
  • build a foundation for Part-time Faculty that enables them to manage multiple courses
  • provide the training necessary for success

Part-time Faculty:

  • report to the Faculty Chair of the various program areas.
  • are hired on a term-by-term basis
  • may manage the same course for multiple terms or manage multiple courses over many terms

Compensation:

  • Part-time Faculty are paid on a monthly basis over a four-month period during the term.
  • Part-time Faculty receive a base fee and a fee for each student that completes the course.

Part-time Faculty Training

Training for Part-time Faculty includes one-on-one interactions and periodic team conference calls with Chairs. Training will focus on teaching and managing an online classroom and understanding the online Learning Management System (LMS). Twenty-one hours of online asynchronous training instruction is required prior to becoming Part-time Faculty and some travel may be required.

Daily Interactions

  Part-time Faculty are responsible for the following daily interactions:

  • welcoming students to the classroom, posting bio and setting office hours
  • outlining course expectations, including syllabus, weekly assessments and key points
  • reviewing learning objectives and key points each week
  • posting and responding to discussions topics
  • responding to student queries/questions in timely manner
  • initiating discussions with students
  • assigning, grading and returning homework and exams in a timely manner

Enhancing the Student-Learning Experiences

NTU's goal is to enhance the student learning experience. Part-time Faculty play an important role in reaching that goal. As Part-time Faculty, you will have frequent and regular interaction with students via classroom discussions, phone, voip, email, and chat room.

Part-time Faculty augment and support the Contributing Scholar and interact as needed throughout the term to support students . The Part-time Faculty recommend revisions for the course to improve course content and continuity. Contributing Scholars provide Part-time Faculty with grading rubrics for assignments and exams.
